When President William Howard Taft dedicated the Pilgrim Monument in 1910, he stayed in this Carver Street house. Built in the 1840s by a banker, the building retains its original Second Empire Victorian exterior style, including an “Ace of Spades” band of cedar shakes along the mansard roof. The 1990s renovations restored the interior with period moldings, custom mahogany doors and reproductions of 1860s and 1880s lighting fixtures. Furnishings in the nine guestrooms are chestnut, walnut and burled maple American Victorian antiques, many of which have marble tops. Lamps are of brass, alabaster and bronze. Room 33 and Room 34 are superior king-bedded rooms situated in the original sun porch, and along with Room 35, open to decks that overlook the pool, as does Room 38, whose oversize deck has sweeping views of the courtyard. Room 39 is a deluxe king-bedded room with an exterior entrance. Room 30 and Room 36 are deluxe king-bedded rooms accessed from the interior. And Room 31, Room 32 and Room 37 are standard queen-bedded rooms also having access from the interior.
